To even open the list of mirrors, the VM actually freezes for about 2 minuets (every time I've tried this). The update manager suggests you choose a Local mirror for quicker download speeds. In Chrome on Windows it looks much like the 'resolving host' problem. Loading a webpage seems to indicate some sort of dns problem because to even start loading a page, it takes roughly two minutes of waiting. They took about the same amount of time to install. I ran through this process a few times on a hybrid disk drive, than the last time on an actual SSD. I didn't really notice a difference in speed. I'm using Linux Mint 19.2 LXDE on VMWare Player 15. Virtual SSD (setup to be one) on an actual SSD to run the operating system.
